Pace Notes

About Pace Notes

Pace Notes is a set of running calculators and short guides for recreational runners in the United States. The goal is simple: you should know your pace, splits and goal times before the gun goes off, and understand where each number comes from.

How we work

Every calculator runs on one small library of running math. Each function is covered by automated tests with cases checked by hand, and the tests must pass before anything is published. Race distances come from World Athletics, and course measurement rules from USA Track & Field (USATF). The mile-to-meter factor comes from NIST.

We use artificial intelligence as a drafting aid. Every number, rule and example is checked against the cited source and against our own calculator before publication. Pace Notes Editorial is responsible for the content.

What we don't do

We are not coaches or doctors. The results are estimates to plan training and races. If you have a health condition, or are starting to run after a long break, talk to a medical professional first.
